This week sees the 26th anniversary of the Falklands war, but to Scottish singer Alison Burns this week also brings closure to a mission that began a quarter of a century ago with a pilgrimage to the Falklands to visit the site of the death of her brother Robert who died in action.After 25 years of trying to find a permanent way of tribute to her brother and the other men and women who lost their lives defending British soil, Alison has put her feelings into song and recorded it with Grammy Award winning guitarist Martin Taylor for inclusion on her new album "1:AM".
"I wasn't even a professional singer when I went to The Falklands, but from the moment I got there I felt that I needed to do something to pay tribute to those who lost their lives. It took me years to feel confident enough to write a song, and even longer to feel that I could sing it.
As my career as a singer took off the response I got from the audiences to my other songs gave me the confidence I needed to complete the lyrics and with Martin arranging the song for simply guitar and voice, I really feel this is what I have been working towards for the last 25 years." - Alison Burns
At first Alison was reluctant to record the song herself, and in a bizarre twist of fortune was actually able to offer "True" in person to Country Singing Legend Dolly Parton who was very keen to record it but at the last moment it was felt that it should be recorded by a British singer, and with the support of Martin Taylor and Alison's family, she rose to the challenge.
"I didn't want the lyrics of "True" to be about war or conflict, I just needed a way to say goodbye and to let him know how proud we were of him, but I did manage to include the words "You truly win because you dare" which includes the moto of the SAS, to which Robert was attached." - Alison Burns
